Origin of the Internet Essay

The Internet as we know it originates from government-funded research into networking technologies with strategic applications. Journalist and erstwhile Internet historian David Hudson (14-16) observes that the ARPANET or Advanced Research Projects Agency Network formed the technical backbone of what would become the Internet. The ARPANET was a communications network in which each node had equal network privileges. The rationale behind this decentralized architecture was that regardless of which node on the network would be destroyed, the network’s functionality would not be compromised. This is perhaps what distinguishes the Internet most from other communications technologies, and is possible due to the development of packet switching and TCP/IP which enabled data to be sent discontinuously to circumvent the need for a dedicated data stream. However, it was not until the ARPANET was interlinked with the NSFNet in the mid-70s that the term â€Å"Internet† began to attain increasing currency among network professionals. Furthermore, the increasing adoption by other nations as well as universities and research institutions of TCP/IP permitted the expansion of the ARPANET’s fundamental architecture, effectively increasing the geographical coverage of the emerging network. (National Science Foundation 10-12) What truly permitted the Internet to integrate itself into the lives of individuals beyond government and research was the rise of several applications and protocols that increased its ‘extracurricular’ potential, most notably hypertext. Hypertext within a computer networking context was developed by CERN’s Tim Berners-Lee but was made ubiquitous by Marc Andreessen’s Mosaic browser, which was the first web browser to gain mass acceptance. Since then, the Web has become the popular face of the Internet. Works Cited Hudson, David. Rewired. Indianapolis, Indiana: MacMillan Technical Publishing, 1997. Aboba, Bernard. The Unlucky Hugo Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

The Unlucky Hugo - Essay Example The Unlucky Hugo Once upon a time, in a beautiful city, there lived a king who had ten beautiful daughters and every one in that city desired to marry them. The king became very famous because of his beautiful daughters and this gave him a great task of making sure that they were safe. To guarantee their security, he employed strong armed soldiers to guard the main entrance to the palace. He also made sure that every window in the room where his daughters slept was secured. The king also ordered two strong soldiers to stand outside the door of the room. However, despite the tight security, the king was very worried by the fact that every morning he could come to the room; he found his daughters’ shoes worn out and looking untidy. â€Å"Could someone be sneaking with my daughters?† the king could ask himself several times. This disturbed the king so much and he could not sleep well at night. After figuring out what could be the problem after a long time, he concluded that his daughters a lways went out for dancing at night with stranger. How could his happen when I have strong soldiers in my palace? Could they be asleep at night?† the king could fall in a deep thought and ask himself these questions. When the king consulted his wise men, no one including the most experienced, could correctly tell how the shoes managed to get dirty and worn out every morning or where the daughters went every night. (Selznick 28). After one week, the king was so impatient to know the truth and decided to make a big announcement to all the people in the city. The king one day said, â€Å"Anyone who tells me the top-secrets behind my daughters’ disappearance at night will be free to have one of his favorite daughters for a wife.† Further, the king said, â€Å"anyone who fails for three days will be executed.† The first person to make an attempt of finding-out the secrets was a prince in the neighboring kingdom and had tried to marry one of the daughters severa l times. Before he could start the mission, it was normal for the palace to prepare a big party at night for anyone who attempted the mission in order to get motivation (Selznick 33). The party consisted of a variety of meals and plenty of wine. After the party, the prince prepared himself very well and was ready to begin the task. When it was time for the king’s daughter to sleep, the prince was very confident of finding out the truth and getting one of the most beautiful girls that he lived to admire. The guard directed the prince to the daughters’ room where he decided to stay outside the door keenly and observe everything that could happen that night. However, the prince fell in a dip sleep and failed to spy anything that happened that night, all he saw when he woke up was the dirty shoes that the king talked about. The following day he decided to repeat the mission, this time being very keen than before but he still failed to find out the truth. At the end of the three days, the prince had not found the answer and he was killed just like the king had instructed that anyone who failed for three days was to be executed. The following weeks, several other handsome gentlemen also attempted the mission and were prepared a great party before starting the task but no one managed to find out the great secrets of king’s daughters disappearance (Selznick 77). It occurred that a middle aged and a very creative man had to solve all of the King’s problems by finding out the truth. Unfortunately, the man had lost his wife in a car accident the previous week but his only son known as Hugo had survived the accident. The man was so creative and was working in the city’s museum as a film creator and he also produced other forms of art work such as drawings, curving and very beautiful ornament. He loved his job and worked very hard in order to support his son Hugo. The death of his wife gave him a great challenge as a single parent in rais ing Hugo (Selznick 64). Consumer behavior - Assignment Example Using the system has got many advantages over conducting a market research. First, it can collect data from a vast sample of shoppers thus increasing the reliability of the information as compared to the market research which only uses a small sample to represent the entire population. It is also cheap since getting this amount of information through market research can prove to be very expensive, especially when one needs to establish baseline data. Using the system also eliminates bias encountered during collection and entry of data. However, an actual market research is more applicable when looking for information before introducing a new product into the market since it can be based on the emotions and realities of the consumers’ lives and hence have greater chance of success (Pan, ПÐ °Ã ½ & ПÐ °Ã ½, 2008). Marketing strategies can also be evaluated before implementation. This is important as it helps a firm to increase the possibilities of success of the strategy (James, 2013) thus avoiding huge losses that may be incurred through failure of a marketing strategy. A successful marketing strategy is one which is measurable, clearly articulated, achievable and actionable (James,

Advertisers use ethos, which is the appeal to authority to convince the audience to use their product or service. Therefore, when advertisers make use of ethos in an advert, they are sure to incorporate influential personalities who are bound to convince the audience. The 5 friends advert is a star-studded affair which includes almost all American celebrities urging people to vote (5 Friends, 2014). According to Fowles, approximately 15% of every advertisement makes use of celebrities, particularly from the fields of entertainment or sports (87). Facebook as a gateway to marketing activities Essay

Facebook as a gateway to marketing activities - Essay Example Facebook is one of the most renowned social network sites in the internet that tries to connect people around the world. It is one of the leading social network sites that have captured billions of people to get connected through virtual friend request and invitation. This website is known to provide more than just entertainment because it is also used to disseminate information to each of the member of the site. In today’s world’s activities where information can become so confusing at some point or very helpful in a way, people may no longer have the time to determine how they are bombarded with diverse idea everyday. In the case of website Facebook people are constantly moving with the trend without them trying to notice how they are used in it. In this paper, the proponent tries to emphasize a specific issue in which people can hardly notice about its existence. This is in line with the marketing strategy used by marketers by tapping social network sites particularl y Facebook. Facebook as a gateway to marketing activities Facebook members seem to know little about it that when they agree with the terms and conditions of the social network site during registration of their account, technically all information they shared with the site belong to Facebook management. The information they shared become the real property of Facebook management in which the member may actually have no real control over them. This is an advantage at the side of Facebook management because they may have necessary data to be processed into useful information for whatever purpose it may provide for their further benefits. Marketers are always studying their consumers and these include demographics or characteristics of human population including sex, religious background, social orientation, culture, education and many more. All of these information are very important to be learned in every marketing activity because through them a marketer will be able to create strate gic move in order to stimulate needs for their product or service offerings. Fortunately, marketers find their way in social network sites to study human behavior and characteristics of human population. For instance, the existence of News Feed and Mini Feed features at Facebook actually triggered privacy issues and discussion of their future influences (Hoadley et al. 50). Certainly this is just a proof that online social network site is not just built for purely interaction among members, but its design is leading forward to spiraling growth of tremendous possibilities. As one result that can be clearly observed, Facebook has become an easy way for business-oriented individuals to promote their service and product offerings. If this is the thought going on with the mind of these simple and ordinary individuals, then certainly there can be more going on in the minds of marketing professionals. In fact, the on-going trend of marketing activity is reaching to interactivity (Deighton and Kornfeld 4). This is a real case going on at Facebook as a social networking site adhering to create healthy interaction among people in every walk of life around the world. Facebook is built to create profit Facebook as an online social network site is instituted to gain and create profit. In order to reach this corporate goal, the management needs to acquire many members as many as possible. This is the reason why there is always an option for ‘friend request’ so as to substantially increase the number of members. The higher number of members is directly associated with the profit or revenue to be obtained. In 2010, the Wall Street Journal reported $710 million estimated revenue of Facebook but other estimates had been revealed to be around $1 to $1.1 billion. These are just estimates at some level but the main point is that Facebook does not start gaining these ranges of revenue. They had started from a very humble beginning. Everything started to go for Facebook ’s favor when the number of their online members had
